Description: Undue police violence refers to the use of inherently violent officer force and has been a growing topic of concern for marginalized populations in the United States. Black Americans are disproportionately targeted with police violence and incarceration compared to their White American counterparts. Research on police violence has linked these occurrences to various symptoms of mental health disorders, such as anxiety, traumatic stress, depression, mania, substance use, and suicide attempts. This program will provide counselors with an overview of the phenomenon of police violence towards Black Americans to inform clinical practice with clients who may be most vulnerable to such experiences. Moreover, this program will provide counselors with the opportunity to learn about liberation-focused advocacy frameworks and objectives to support Black American clients and other client populations impacted by police violence.
